Looks like the world won't end after all in 2012

Quote:It's a good news/bad news situation for believers in the 2012 Mayan apocalypse. The good news is that the Mayan "Long Count" calendar may not end on Dec. 21, 2012 (and, by extension, the world may not end along with it). The bad news for prophecy believers? If the calendar doesn't end in December 2012, no one knows when it actually will — or if it has already.

A new critique, published as a chapter in the new textbook "Calendars and Years II: Astronomy and Time in the Ancient and Medieval World" (Oxbow Books, 2010), argues that the accepted conversions of dates from Mayan to the modern calendar may be off by as much as 50 or 100 years.

That would throw the supposed and overhyped 2012 apocalypse off by decades and cast into doubt the dates of historical Mayan events. (The doomsday worries are based on the fact that the Mayan calendar ends in 2012, much as our year ends on Dec. 31.)

I knew it. Wink
i can't believe anyone believe anyone ever thought that 2012 crap was true. Mellow
Ah man, and I had tons of plans on what to do when the world ended. Sad What am I going to do with all my supplies now. Tongue
So when will it end?

I expect the world to end about 4.5 billion years from now when the sun bloats into a red giant.
That Mayan calendar thing was blown out of proportion anyway. 2012 is just when their calendar ends, similar to how ours ends on December 31st. We do stuff on a smaller time scale so we have to deal with it more often. The Mayans just never got around to making a new one.
This is disappointing. How am I going to pay all of those "no payments until 2013" items I bought? Realmad
How much longer are we gonna have to sit through these delays? Every time somebody tells me that the world is ending, I run down to my underground hideout only to be disappointed! The world was supposed to end hundreds of times by now, and now they're telling us that maybe it already happened!

If you can't trust an ambiguous record of a lost culture's calendar, then what can you trust? Who do we have to blow to get some decent apocalyptic prophecies these days!?
The Mayan Calendar doesn't just end on 12/21/2012... it merely moves onto the next "catoon" or "phase" in the long count series on the Mayan calendar wheel.

The world will end, when it ends. One way or another we will all eventually take our leave of this world.

Besides, if the Mayans had everything figured out, why didn't they foresee their own demise?
