Atheists cite resurgence as they gather on Easter weekend
Quote:While millions of Christians worldwide will celebrate Easter this weekend, David Silverman has other plans.
Silverman will join about 300 atheists in a Newark, New Jersey, hotel ballroom to proclaim another message: The atheist movement in America is growing.
Silverman will participate in the 36th annual American Atheists National Convention at the Newark Liberty Renaissance Hotel. He'll also try to clear up a misconception: Atheists aren't immoral, and they don't worship Satan.
So? Do you think there is a resurgence with atheism?

There's definitely a rise from what I've seen. Probably from people who sees what organized religion has done to the world in the past and present.
I know several closet atheists myself. Most of them are afraid to come out and say it because they don't want to hurt their (uber-Christian) families.

Down here in Australia, the head of the Catholic and Anglican Churches in (both very conservative) used their Easter sermons to take aim at at atheists by saying they're people who hate God. Personally, I think they're full of crap.
I just don't think they really understand that it's pretty hard to preach morality when you're part of an group that's covers up the abuse of children. They just don't seem to get how big of a deal that is, how so many people are looking at them with contempt.
Wait, how can you be angry at something you don't believes exists? People like those priests remind me why I don't like Christianity all that much.

Pffff... it's just another perceived war for these people. If you don't harm a soul and at the same time don't believe in God, somehow you'd be a part of an assault on God. Break it down:
"Assault" = Not agreeing with what I believe.
"On God" = Not doing what I want you to do.
It's self motivated, self righteous gnashing of teeth. And interestingly enough, Jesus had a great deal of contempt for that kind of behavior.
It is completely ridiculous to say I have anything against God what so ever. I don't believe in God for a very good reason and it's not because I'm sinning.
I'm sure if God exists, he most likely isn't the prick the major religions make him out to be and I doubt that he'd consider some people not believing in him an 'assault'. Seems to me that there are many, many things that are worthier of condemnation (like abusing children or blowing yourself up).
