True. I suspect "Freedom" is just a code word to complain about taxes and/or government regulation. I'm not sure what else they could be defending since - with the exception of the right to bear arms - they're not overly fond of much of the Bill of Rights.
Conservatives can't seem to understand the true ramifications of supporting freedom, which means supporting the freedoms of people whose lifestyles you may not like (like gay marriage).
