NEWSWEEK Poll: Obama Approval Rating Jumps, Democrats Close ‘Enthusiasm Gap’

Quote:Despite doom-saying about Democrats’ chances in the midterms, the latest NEWSWEEK Poll (full results) shows that they remain in a close race with Republicans 12 days before Election Day, while the president’s approval ratings have climbed sharply. The poll finds that 48 percent of registered voters would be more likely to vote for Democrats, compared with 42 percent who lean Republican (those numbers are similar to those in the last NEWSWEEK Poll, which found Democrats favored 48 percent to 43 percent). President Obama’s approval ratings have jumped substantially, crossing the magic halfway threshold to 54 percent, up from 48 percent in late September, while the portion of respondents who disapprove of the president dropped to 40 percent, the lowest disapproval rating in a NEWSWEEK Poll since February 2010. However, his approval rating, which is notably higher than many recent polls of the president’s popularity, may be evidence of a closing “enthusiasm gap” more than a sea change in voter attitudes, and may not substantially affect Democrats’ fortunes come Election Day. In 1994, NEWSWEEK Polls showed a similar steep climb in President Clinton’s approval between late September and late October, but Democrats still suffered a rout in the midterms.

This is certainly hopeful. I've been expecting some sort of firing up of the Dem base if only because so many people are saying that Republicans will win. I imagine that might get some iffy people out to vote against the Republicans even if they're not crazy about the Dems.
Here's something: Rand Paul supporters pin down and curb-stomp MoveOn activist (with video)

Must be the stance of the Tea Party on the Freedom of Speech and Assembly: If they say something you don't agree with, try and step on their head to break their neck!

I wonder, what was the excuse the democrats had for not fulfilling THEIR agenda, despite owning the house, the senate, and the presidency for two years?

What have the dems done to improve the country?

They got us out of the worst economic recession since the 1930's, that's what they've done. Sure, they had to spend alot of money to do it, which is what you must not like, but if the Tea Party folks had their way we'd be in a Great Depression right now with unemployment in the double digits. But at least we might have a much smaller federal deficit to comfort us as we wait in line at the food banks.

I'd like to point out that when people look back longingly at the good old days of prosperity, they almost always look back to the late 1990's under Bill Clinton and not to the Reagan or Bush years.

EDIT: Here's a fun fact: When Reagan entered office in January 1981, the unemployment rate was 7.5%. At this exact same point in his Presidency (21 months), the unemployment rate was 10.8%. Net increase for Reagen = +3.3%. For Obama, who came into office in January 2009 with an unemployment rate of 7.8%. Unemployment today is 9.6%. Net increase for Obama = +1.8%. That's a little than half of the increase we saw under Reagan and Obama had a FAR FAR worse economy to deal with.
You know something, at this point I don't care who wins I just want all the damn political ads off the TV. Pinch It seems every other commercial on our local channels is an ad involving Linda McMahon bitching over Dick Blumenthal. I just want them gone already. Wallbash

A lady wearing what is obviously a disguise going after a high profile political candidate is a threat. She deserved it. Stupid liberal idiot. Dry
^You're kidding right? The Tea Party folks openly carry guns to political rallies and town hall meetings, they're apparently just "exercising their rights." But wearing a wig makes someone a threat now? I guess a wig is more of a threat now than a gun.

Would you say the same thing if it was a Tea Partiers who brought guns to town hall meetings were tackled and tazered? I doubt it.
They're action was inexcusable. THIS is that mob mentality created when people think it's okay to treat someone who disagrees with them like the enemy. Rand Paul is a slimy asshole of a politician, and he needs to lose.
I just love the idea that bringing a semi-automatic rifle to see the President speak is just fine, but wearing a blond wig to question a Senatorial candidate is dangerous... Huh
Why is it that Tea Partiers see themselves as victims of something or other? That victimhood is being used to justify just about every asshole stunt they pull.

They're like fundamentalist Christians. "We don't know all the history, we don't understand the source material and we don't get the inner workings, but we're right, you're wrong and we're being oppressed!"

Regardless of her intentions there she didn't do anything to warrant the physical assult on her. It pisses me off when people (on either side) blow off extreme acts as "Well what do you expect? People are angry". That's no excuse for the behavior we've seen the last couple of years.
So is this how they want the world to work: If someone really, really, REALLY pisses you off you can stomp the crap outta them? This the America they want?

Can you imagine how much Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and others in the world would be crapping themselves with rage had this been a left winger stomping on a teabagger?

There is a strong inclination in the conservative movement to feel suppressed or persecuted. It's not restricted to the US, either. Over here, they whine about different things, like supposedly not being allowed to sing the national anthem or (my favourite) being disadvantaged in favour of foreigners. It's really absurd, but apparently some people do believe it.
Conservatives are just playing to the very base of American humanity.

I saw a news blurb from Palin with her saying something like "Obama has failed at his job. He's had two years to turn this country around and he hasn't done it!" Forgetting that it took 8 years of bad policy making and decisions to get us here, Obama's policies did, at least, stabilize things and the Republicans have been nothing but a giant wall blocking the entire way.

I'm also going to stop taking seriously any political person or ad who continues to call some minor health care reform "Obamacare" like it's the end of the world.

I'm going into my voting booth tomorrow and I'm voting straight Democrat. On offices where there's no D option? I'm writing myself in.

I'm tired of the Right. They need to die off already and let progress take over; we're not going to get there by selling lies and crap.
