I recently bought a home and it has a septic system instead of a sewer. For many years I've always seen commercials for that Rid-ex stuff (you know the ones with the septic guy digging up the yard telling people that using Rid-ex will save you alot of money in the long run) I want to know is it really worth the Rid-ex stuff? Does it work? Or is it not worth it?
I don't think it's worth it. Me, my parents or my grandparents never used it and they've never had any septic trouble. Just don't flush anything down your toilet/pour stuff down drains you're not suppose to, pump out your tank when you're suppose to and you should be fine.
I agree with Mr. Tight-pants, it's not necessary though it probably doesn't hurt to do it once in a while (especially if your Washing machine empties into the tank).
Thanks guys. On a related note, what shouldn't be put into a septic system?
I've used Rid-ex once or twice but no one I know has problems with their septic systems (well, expect for an Uncle of mine who once tore up his leech field while digging a pool).

You shouldn't use too many cleaners that go down the drain, especially the kind that can kill bacteria. They're ok once in a while, but not often. Also avoid garbage disposals and pouring cooking oil down drains.
As already mentioned, try to avoid pumping your Washing machine into the tank, and if you must, don't use too much soap/bleach and try to merge loads.
Other than that, just make sure to pump out the tank often and make sure that the outlet tank baffle isn't damaged/missing.

Yeah, better watch those baffles, my grandparents ended up with a flooded yard because their tank's outlet baffle had broken off and they never knew it and their leech field ended up clogged up with the scum crap that the baffles normally hold back.

I'll be sure to check that but how will I know if it's damaged or not?
You might wanna try reading
